Books Description:

From bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair comes a dark and enthralling reimagining of the Hades and Persephone Greek myth. "Let me worship you," he said. She remembered the words she had whispered to him in the back of the limo after La Rose. "You will worship me, and I won't even have to order you." His request felt sinful and devious, and she reveled in it. She answered, "Yes." Persephone is the Goddess of Spring in title only. Since she was a little girl, flowers have only shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hoped to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist. All of that changes when she sits down in a forbidden nightclub to play a hand of cards with a hypnotic and mysterious stranger. Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible. But nothing has ever intrigued him as much as the goddess offering him a bargain he can't resist. After her encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead, and his terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever. The bet does more than expose Persephone's failure as a goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—a love that is both captivating and forbidden.

MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Books Description:

Every president has had a unique and complicated relationship with the intelligence community. While some have been coolly distant, even adversarial, others have found their intelligence agencies to be among the most valuable instruments of policy and power. Since John F. Kennedy's presidency, this relationship has been distilled into a personalized daily report: a short summary of what the intelligence apparatus considers the most crucial information for the president to know that day about global threats and opportunities. This top–secret document is known as the President's Daily Brief, or, within national security circles, simply “the Book.” Presidents have spent anywhere from a few moments (Richard Nixon) to a healthy part of their day (George W. Bush) consumed by its contents; some (Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush) consider it far and away the most important document they saw on a regular basis while commander in chief. The details of most PDBs are highly classified, and will remain so for many years. But the process by which the intelligence community develops and presents the Book is a fascinating look into the operation of power at the highest levels. David Priess, a former intelligence officer and daily briefer, has interviewed every living president and vice president as well as more than one hundred others intimately involved with the production and delivery of the president's book of secrets. He offers an unprecedented window into the decision making of every president from Kennedy to Obama, with many character–rich stories revealed here for the first time.

Books Description:

THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Sparkling with mystery, humor and the uncanny, this is a fun read. But beneath its effervescent tone, more complex themes are at play.” —San Francisco Chronicle In his wildly entertaining debut novel, Hank Green—cocreator of Crash Course, Vlogbrothers, and SciShow—spins a sweeping, cinematic tale about a young woman who becomes an overnight celebrity before realizing she's part of something bigger, and stranger, than anyone could have possibly imagined. The Carls just appeared. Roaming through New York City at three a.m., twenty-three-year-old April May stumbles across a giant sculpture. Delighted by its appearance and craftsmanship—like a ten-foot-tall Transformer wearing a suit of samurai armor—April and her best friend, Andy, make a video with it, which Andy uploads to YouTube. The next day, April wakes up to a viral video and a new life. News quickly spreads that there are Carls in dozens of cities around the world—from Beijing to Buenos Aires—and April, as their first documentarian, finds herself at the center of an intense international media spotlight. Seizing the opportunity to make her mark on the world, April now has to deal with the consequences her new particular brand of fame has on her relationships, her safety, and her own identity. And all eyes are on April to figure out not just what the Carls are, but what they want from us. Compulsively entertaining and powerfully relevant, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing grapples with big themes, including how the social internet is changing fame, rhetoric, and radicalization; how our culture deals with fear and uncertainty; and how vilification and adoration spring for the same dehumanization that follows a life in the public eye. The beginning of an exciting fiction career, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is a bold and insightful novel of now.

Ellingham Academy must be cursed. Three people are now dead. One, a victim of either a prank gone wrong or a murder. Another, dead by misadventure. She’s solved it. The greatest case of the century. At least, she thinks she has. With this latest tragedy, it’s hard to concentrate on the past. During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. The trip begins innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps, just as a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead. . . and another of them did it. Keep your friends close, the old adage says. But how close is too close? DON'T BE LEFT OUT. Books Description:

The agents at the IRS Regional Examination Center in Peoria, Illinois, appear ordinary enough to newly arrived trainee David Foster Wallace. But as he immerses himself in a routine so tedious and repetitive that new employees receive boredom-survival training, he learns of the extraordinary variety of personalities drawn to this strange calling. And he has arrived at a moment when forces within the IRS are plotting to eliminate even what little humanity and dignity the work still has. The Pale King remained unfinished at the time of David Foster Wallace's death, but it is a deeply compelling and satisfying novel, hilarious and fearless and as original as anything Wallace ever undertook. It grapples directly with ultimate questions--questions of life's meaning and of the value of work and society--through characters imagined with the interior force and generosity that were Wallace's unique gifts. Along the way it suggests a new idea of heroism and commands infinite respect for one of the most daring writers of our time.

Books Description:

How do we understand our place in today’s Jewish world? Whether it’s our food, our religious services, or our literature, we enjoy a rich tradition of faith and culture that is not without important lessons for the Jewish world today. In A Touch of Torah, author Anne Lowe shares her own reflections on being Jewish as she tries to grasp the intricacies of Torah. Inspired by the weekly D’var Torah she presents at her conservative synagogue, Anne covers a number of topics that all have a Jewish connection—from evoking the flavors of Jewish life, such as making pickled dill green tomatoes or explaining the joy of eating a candy jellied apple after Simchat Torah services, to heartfelt discussions of the Garden of Eden, and to Sarah’s pregnancy at ninety years old, and other important stories from the Torah. As a delightful montage of midrashim, Divrei Torah, poetry, and trips down the memory lane of Anne’s Upstate New York childhood, A Touch of Torah can serve as a timely reminder of the daily importance of Torah. Because the Torah is alive today, it resonates in our modern world.

Books Description:

The eagerly awaited new novel from Canada’s top crime-fiction writer. It’s the May half-term school holiday, and the first warm day of the year has drawn a few children to the River Swain for a swim. When one boy chases another off the path that runs alongside Hindswell Woods, a glimpse of orange through the trees tempts them into the shadows. Moments later, their high spirits vanish in an instant, for there, to their shock (and ghoulish fascination), they find a man in a brightly coloured shirt hanging from a branch by a rope around his neck. Alan Banks is in London with his new girlfriend when news of the kids’ ghastly discovery reaches the police in Eastvale, so the case falls to Annie Cabbot. And she’s mystified. Why would a successful set and costume designer, with a well-reviewed production of Othello currently playing, be in such despair that he would take his own life? In All the Colours of Darkness, Peter Robinson has written an exceptionally gripping and intricately plotted story that delivers hard truths about jealousy and betrayal — and of the insidious, corrosive power of secrets. Once more, Robinson proves that he is one of the finest crime-fiction writers in the world.

Books Description:

Did a lost population of feral people dwell in the darker recesses of the N.F.D. in Kenya’s remote north? How was it possible to communicate over vast distances without the benefits of modern technology? Why did the Yanomama who lived deep in the Amazon rainforest practice female infanticide as part of their cultural survival? How was it possible for these so called primitive people on two continents to produce a designer poison using only one of the millions of insects that abounded around them? Do elephants have a sense of impending death? Who were the ‘white’ men the nomads encountered on the plains of Kenya in a forgotten and desolate wilderness? These are but a few of the stories found in ‘A Touch of Africa,’ and Part II ‘Onto the Amazon.’ My journeys have taken me to Africa, the Amazon jungle, and the sub Arctic in Canada’s far north. I fished with lepers on the Amazon River in the blackest of nights, walked the slave route in central Africa, and stood on the ground where Stanley presumed to meet Livingstone. The characters encountered in the backcountry were unique, each with their own fascinating tale, and over the years they became unwavering friends. I came to know the smell of famine and buried the dead, came down with malaria and later, black swamp fever. While on safari the unexpected became the norm as roads disappeared and the elephant assumed the right of way. It was in Kenya, East Africa where I experienced a way of life without the benefits of all the creature comforts we seem to believe are necessities. I started off teaching African students in a ‘bush’ school. My timetable included weekly forays into backcountry where as a novice, I was expected to hunt enough game to feed the school’s nearly three hundred students. I was fortunate enough to meet a group of Italian old timers who lived and worked in some of the remotest areas of Kenya. Through these newly acquired contacts, I was able to safari beyond the tourist line and back in time to an Africa of yesterday. I learned KiSwahili and roamed the infamous Northern Frontier District, the N.F.D., with the elegant Samburu and fearless Turkana warriors where each day life teetered on the edge. Big game abounded and became part of everyday existence. One had to learn the boundaries set out by lion and poisoness snakes. Over the years I came to glimpse the world through the eyes of these warrior nomads. They taught me the signs left behind by the creatures that roamed the wilds. I spent a brief moment with the Yanomama Indians in the Amazon, a hunting gathering people who represent a continuous link with the Paleolithic Age. I followed them deep into the tropical rain forest on a hunting expedition and witnessed them revert back to an earlier time as they communicated using the sounds of the jungle animals. These are a people who visualize in one dimension and count to two and conclude with ‘many.’ Each afternoon when returning from the forest, the day’s catch might be a howler monkey, a toucan or two, sometimes a turtle or a turkey sized bird, but most often several brilliantly colored parrots which thrived in the forest canopy. ‘A TOUCH OF AFRICA,’ and PART II, ‘ONTO TO THE AMAZON,’ was deliberated over for the past twenty-five years and finally committed to the present format. The material is true, the people are real, and the humor unfolded to the observant eye. It was truly an adventurous time in a magnificent setting with intriguing people who became family.

Books Description:

Everything you want is on the other side of your greatest fear. Although we are sometimes resistant, hard times, challenges, and difficulties help make us who we are. Like the transformative metamorphosis from black coal to diamond, only after extreme pressure, and the passing of time, do we see the result. It is up to us whether we focus on the pain or the result. Many self-help books will say that if we just ask for what we want, we will get it, but what if we never learned to ask for what we really want? In this book, author Karinna Damgård explores how learning from a young age not to trust intuition, not to ask for help for fear of being a burden, has held us back. How will you learn the grandness of truth, if you were always told a lie? How can you learn to empower yourself, if life always taught you the opposite? How can you learn to better yourself if you are always busy watching out for the next big earthquake? Interweaving personal experiences with her expertise as a clairvoyant, healer, mentor, spiritual advisor, and intuitive soul, Damgård seeks to guide others through an introspective and inspirational step-by-step process that encourages movement away from self-imposed fears and expectations and into a new phase of personal growth where we recognize our own beauty, light, divinity, and how we shine with help from God, even in a chaotic world. A Touch of Vertigo is a down-to-earth guide that leads positive change seekers down a thoughtful path of personal growth and spiritual transformation to address fears and move forward into a new beginning filled with divine miracles.

Books Description:

Nysa appeared mysteriously with a request of Northwest Smith... excerpt The thick Venusian dark of the Ednes waterfront in the hours before dawn is breathless and tense with a nameless awareness, a crouching danger. The shapes that move murkily thru its blackness are not daylight shapes. Sun has never shone upon some of those misshapen figures, and what happens in the dark is better left untold. Not even the Patrol ventures there after the lights are out, and the hours between midnight and dawn are outside the law. If dark things happen there the Patrol never knows of them, or desires to know. Powers move thru the darkness along the waterfront to which even the Patrol bows low. Thru that breathless blackness, along a street beneath which the breathing waters whispered, Northwest Smith strolled slowly. No prudent man ventures out after midnight along the waterfront of Ednes unless he has urgent business abroad, but from the leisurely gait that carried Smith soundlessly thru the dark he might have been some casual sightseer. He was no stranger to the Ednes waterfront. He knew the danger thru which he strolled so slowly, and under narrowed lids his colorless eyes were like keen steel probes that searched the dark. Now and then he passed a shapeless shadow that dodged aside to give him way. It might have been no more than a shadow. His no-colored eyes did not waver. He went on, alert and wary. He was passing between two high warehouses that shut out even the faint reflection of light from the city beyond when he first heard that sound of bare, running feet which so surprised him. The patter of frantically fleeing steps is not uncommon along the waterfront, but these were-he listened closer-yes, certainly the feet of a woman or a young boy. Light and quick and desperate. His ears were keen enough to be sure of that. They were coming nearer swiftly. In the blackness even his pale eyes could see nothing, and he drew back against the wall, one hand dropping to the ray gun that hung low on his thigh. He had no desire to meet whatever it was which pursued this fugitive. But his brows knit as the footsteps turned into the street that led between the warehouses. No woman, of whatever class or kind, ventures into this quarter by night. And he became certain as he listened that those feet were a woman's. There was a measured rhythm about them that suggested the Venusian woman's lovely, swaying gait. He pressed flat against the wall, holding his breath. He wanted no sound to indicate his own presence to the terror from which the woman fled. Ten years before he might have dashed out to her-but ten years along the spaceways teaches a man prudence. Gallantry can be foolhardy sometimes, particularly along the waterfront, where any of a score of things might be in close pursuit. At the thought of what some of those things might be the hair prickled faintly along his neck.
